Weapon upgrade from lvl3 to 7?

Any way for those of us who got the lvl 3 weapons to get them upgraded to the, now available, lvl 7? Or is this a case of "buyer beware"?
The pen is mightier than the sword... but only at a distance.

It is not possible to upgrade weapons you bought.
